The Canadian Language Benchmarks are standards for Adult English as an Additional Language teaching and testing. They are used in Manitoba EAL programs as well as in other provinces.
There are 12 CLB levels. Each level specifies reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. For example, at CLB Level 1 students can write their name and address. The abilities required to be at Level 8 include writing a business letter.
The Centre for Canadian Language Benchmarks (CCLB) sets the standards and supports and promotes the use of the CLB in educational, training, community and workplace settings.
CLB information and resources
The CCLB has publications and other material such as research reports, directories, articles and reviews of interest to EAL teachers.
CLB classroom posters
Benchmark posters are available from the CCLB. Each poster outlines tasks for listening, speaking, reading and writing for the level. They cost $5 each.
CLB classroom handouts
Below are MS Word pages for each level. You can adapt the documents and use them as student handouts.
You could, for instance, add examples of the tasks to make the list consistent with individual and class goals and objectives; students could check off tasks as they master them.
Teachers may also suggest students download our PDF booklet Practise English on your own. It explains the requirements of each level.
