Online learning resources

This page lists two free interactive websites, a downloadable self-study booklet and an in-depth booklet about working in Canada written for English learners. These resources are endorsed by the Adult Language Training Branch of Manitoba Labour and Immigration.

ENGLISH Online

This site was specially developed to help adult newcomers to Manitoba improve their ability to read, write, listen and speak in English.

The online lessons are based on situations you'd face at work or in the community, such as:

  • answering the telephone
  • understanding instructions at work
  • speaking with customers

English Online lessons include a glossary of words used, practice exercises, and audio clips – so you can hear, as well as read, the words used.

The lessons get harder the more you study, so your English skills will get better with every visit. You're encouraged to visit as often as you like.

Learning English with CBC Manitoba

The CBC is Manitoba's public radio service. This free website uses parts of weekly newscasts to create language lessons. You learn language skills as well as current events and the Manitoban "accent."

Although Manitobans speak standard Canadian English, the speed, intonation, conventions, as well as the use of local expressions and idioms in everyday conversations present challenges for some immigrants.

Each week a new English lesson is added to the website. The lessons involve listening to interviews from the radio show Manitoba This Week, and following instructions on a lesson plan that you can read online or print. You will practise listening, speaking and reading.

Practise English On Your Own

(PDF) Download this booklet of self-study ideas. It has suggestions on how to practise English. It was written by English teachers with the help of students.

This booklet will help you take charge of your English learning. It will help you understand the Canadian Language Benchmarks. These "benchmarks" are standards that are used in Canada for teaching and testing in English as an Additional Language classes.
