Manitoba residents can take free English classes if they are a: permanent resident or Canadian citizen born outside Canada; a refugee claimant, or a provincial nominee (including spouses and adult children) who have received their letter of approval from the province.
Language assessment
Before you start taking English classes you need to do a language assessment. This is a test that measures your English skills so you can choose the English class that is right for you.
If you are new to Manitoba: Go to the ENTRY Program. During this orientation program for new immigrants, arrangements will be made for you to meet an assessor at the Winnipeg English Language Assessment and Referral Centre.

Learning English with CBC Manitoba
This website creates a new language lesson each week that involves listening to CBC Radio news stories and following a written lesson plan. You will practise listening, speaking and reading.
Practise English On Your Own (PDF)
This booklet has suggestions on how to study English on your own following the Canadian Language Benchmarks. These "benchmarks" are standards that are used for teaching and testing in English as an Additional Language classes.
English Online
This interactive website has online lessons based on situations you'll face at work or in the community such as answering the telephone, understanding instructions at work, speaking with customers.
