learner Manitoba provides adult newcomers with free English classes for adult newcomers. To start taking classes you first need an assessment. This is a free test that measures your English skills to place you in the correct English class.

If you are new to Manitoba

Go to the ENTRY Program. While you are taking part in this orientation program, they will arrange for your language assessment.

If you are not new to Manitoba

Phone WELARC (Winnipeg English Language Assessment and Referral Centre) to make an appointment with a language assessor: 943-5387.

The language assessment simply tests what you can do in English. You do not need to study. After the assessment you will be referred to the English program that is best for you.

There are many different English classes in Manitoba. There are classes at different levels, and with different goals. It is important that you get an assessment so you can join the correct class for your level and life or career goals.

Who can take free English classes?


Manitoba residents can take free English classes if they are a: permanent resident or Canadian citizen born outside Canada; a refugee claimant, or a provincial nominee (including spouses and adult children) who have received their letter of approval from the province.
