Street and road maps

You can get free maps at the airport. And they are for sale in most gas stations and convenience stores. Manitoba Immigration's
Winnipeg Map for Newcomers is available at the ENTRY Program and other settlement agencies. It shows the location of immigrant services, government offices and other points of interest. You can also use the
interactive map on this website.
Phone books
The telephone white pages lists the name, address and phone number of every business and government office, and most people, in the area they serve. (Listed is the last name first, eg. Look for John Smith under "S" for Smith). You receive phone books free when you arrange for home phone service. Or, visit a
MTS Connect Store.
Yellow Pages is a separate book that lists businesses – restaurants, services, stores, etc. – by subject or product. The phone books also have sections for bus maps, postal codes, government offices, community services such as libraries, health, visitor and emergency information.
The telephone book explains long-distance calls as well as the special numbers 911 -- for life-threatening emergencies, and 411 for directory assistance.
Libraries
There are free libraries in each area of
Winnipeg and in most towns. You can borrow books, video, CDs and other materials. Libraries are listed in the phone book. Most provide free Internet access.
City services
Winnipeg service directory lists fire, ambulance, swimming pools, libraries, garbage pickup, etc. You can search by keyword. Or, dial 311. At this number you can do everything from pay a parking ticket to register your child for swimming lessons.
