WORK IN YOUR PROFESSION 
AUDIOLOGIST AND SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST

Audiologists and speech-language pathologists diagnose, evaluate and treat human communication disorders including hearing, speech, language and voice disorders. Audiologists and speech-language pathologists are employed in hospitals, community and public health centres, extended care facilities, day clinics, rehabilitation centres and educational institutions, or may work in private practice.

Licensing process in Manitoba

These professions are regulated in Manitoba by the Manitoba Speech and Hearing Association.

Note: The association conducts the licensing process in English only. Thus, all requested documents must be translated into English.

To practise audiology or speech-language pathology in Manitoba you must:

  • have a master's degree or equivalent in audiology or speech-language pathology
  • be registered with the Manitoba Speech and Hearing Association

You must complete the following steps:

STEP 1: Contact the Manitoba Speech and Hearing Association and tell them you are an internationally educated audiologist or speech-language pathologist and want to hear more on how to become licensed to practise in Manitoba.

STEP 2: Complete the Manitoba Speech and Hearing Association application form to apply for provisional registration.*

You must submit the following:

  • completion of 350 clinical clock hours (submitted by educational facility)
  • criminal record check and child abuse registry check
  • completed transcript breakdown form
  • transcripts (assessed by a recognized credential assessment agency** if you did not graduate from a recognized North American university program with a master's degree)
  • application fee: C$31.50

If the above documents are not in English, notarized translations are required.

STEP 3: When requirements have been met and fees paid, you may practise as an audiologist or speech-language pathologist in Manitoba.

Other information

Manitoba Speech and Hearing Association annual membership fee is C$325.

* Once you have been approved for provisional registration you must work under the supervision of a fully registered member of the Manitoba Speech and Hearing Association for up to one year.

Language: As part of your work, you are required to have intermediate or advanced English language skills in the four basic language areas - listening, speaking and reading and writing comprehension. Therefore, you should be able to:

  • participate in discussions of a complex nature
  • share your thoughts clearly
  • understand technical documents
  • write reports in English with confidence
