WORK IN YOUR PROFESSION 
DENTIST

Dentists diagnose and treat disorders of the teeth, mouth and jaw. They work in private practice or may be employed in hospitals, clinics, public health facilities or universities.

Licensing process in Manitoba

This profession is regulated in Manitoba by the Manitoba Dental Association.

Note: The association conducts the licensing process in English only. Thus, all documents must be translated into English.

To practise dentistry in Manitoba you must:

  • have a degree in dentistry from a recognized university in Canada or the United States OR you must complete an accredited qualifying program or an accredited degree completion program
  • be registered and licensed by the Manitoba Dental Association

You must complete the following steps:

STEP 1: Contact the Manitoba Dental Association and tell them you are an internationally educated dentist and would like information on how to become licensed to practise in Manitoba.

STEP 2: Contact the National Dental Examining Board of Canada.

STEP 3: Complete the certification examination to obtain a dental examining board certificate.

STEP 4: Complete the Manitoba Dental Association application form.

You must submit the following:

  • confirmation of graduation from an accredited dental program
  • copy of National Dental Examining Board of Canada certificate
  • letter of good standing from the licensing body in the country in which you practised
  • two letters of professional reference
  • evidence of a policy of professional liability insurance acceptable to the Manitoba Dental Association (minimum C$3 million)
  • registration fee: C$100
  • annual licensing fee: C$3,000

STEP 5: Contact the Manitoba Dental Association for a licensing orientation appointment.

Additional information

Language: As part of your work, you are required to have intermediate or advanced English language skills in the four basic language areas - listening, speaking and reading and writing comprehension. Therefore, you should be able to:

  • participate in discussions of a complex nature
  • share your thoughts clearly
  • understand technical documents
  • write reports in English with confidence
