WORK IN YOUR PROFESSION 
EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATOR

Early childhood educators ensure high-quality care and education for children aged three months to 12 years. There are three levels of classification - child care assistant (CCA), early childhood educator II (ECE II) and early childhood educator III (ECE III).

Classification process in Manitoba

Early childhood education is a regulated occupation in Manitoba.

To practise early childhood education in Manitoba:

  • You must have first aid and CPR training.
  • You must provide a criminal record check and child abuse registry check upon employment.
  • If you would like to be a child care assistant you must have 40 hours of approved child care training within the first year of employment in a licensed child care centre.
  • If you would like to be an early childhood educator II or III you must have a diploma or degree in early childhood education from a recognized post-secondary institution OR you must obtain a competency-based program assessment certificate from Manitoba Early Learning and Child Care OR you must follow an internationally educated qualifications assessment program process through Manitoba Early Learning and Child Care.

You must complete the following steps:

STEP 2: Complete the Manitoba Early Learning and Child Care application for classification form.

If you are applying to be a child care assistant no additional documentation is required.

If you are applying to be an ECE II or III you must submit:

  • signed declaration
  • original transcripts and original diploma or degree *
  • proof of name change (if applicable)
  • course descriptions and/or syllabus, if available

* If documents are not in English or French, notarized translations are required.

STEP 3: Submit your application to Manitoba Early Learning and Child Care. You will receive your classification certificate in the mail. You may be required to meet with a qualifications specialist or have a credentials assessment completed through one of the Canadian credentials assessment agencies.

Additional information

There is no fee for the classification process.

You may be eligible for a competency-based assessment program after two years of employment if you have degree or diploma in a related field. The program takes about six to eight months to complete.

You may be eligible for the internationally educated qualifications assessment program if you have international education in early childhood education. The program takes about four months to complete.
