LICENSING STEPS 
NATUROPATH

Naturopathic medicine focuses on prevention and uses natural methods and substances to enhance healing. Naturopathic doctors examine, diagnose and treat patients. Their approach emphasizes support and stimulation of the body's own healing mechanisms. Their goal is to empower Manitobans to attain optimal health of body, mind and spirit by providing safe, naturopathic medical care.

Naturopathic doctors work in private clinics and integrative medical clinics. They sometimes work in hospitals.

Licensing process in Manitoba

This profession is regulated in Manitoba by the Manitoba Naturopathic Association.

Note: The association conducts the licensing process in English only. Thus, all requested documents must be translated into English.

To practise naturopathic medicine in Manitoba you must:

  • have completed a program in naturopathic medicine from a school approved by the Council on Naturopathic Medical Education
  • be licensed with the Manitoba Naturopathic Association

You must complete the following steps:

STEP 1: Contact a school approved by the Council on Naturopathic Medical Education to have your education assessed and to complete any necessary requirements. Please check the council website or phone the council to obtain a list of approved schools.

STEP 2: Contact the North American Board of Naturopathic Examiners.

STEP 3: Complete the following NPLEX examinations:

  • Part I - Biomedical Science Examination (required)
  • Part II - Core Clinical Science Examination (required)
  • Part II - Clinical Elective Acupuncture Examination (if you plan on practising acupuncture)

STEP 4: Contact the Manitoba Naturopathic Association.

STEP 5: Complete the Manitoba Naturopathic Association application form for licensing.

You must submit the following:

  • official transcript from your college of study
  • official copy of your NPLEX examination scores
  • criminal record check from a Canadian police office
  • application fee: C$200

STEP 6: Complete the Manitoba jurisprudence examination and Manitoba Oral Examination.

STEP 7: When are requirements have been met and fees paid, you will be licensed as a naturopathic doctor in Manitoba.

Additional information

Licensing fee is C$2,000 per year for a full-time doctor who has been previously registered as a naturopathic doctor, and C$1,500 for first year registrants.

NPLEX examination fees are as follows:

  • Application and exam administration fee: US$125
  • Part I - biomedical science examination fee: US$275
  • Part II - core clinical science examination fee: US$475
  • Part II - clinical elective acupuncture exam fee: US$75

Language: As part of your work, you are required to have intermediate or advanced English language skills in the four basic language areas - listening, speaking and reading and writing comprehension. Therefore, you should be able to:

  • participate in discussions of a complex nature
  • share your thoughts clearly
  • understand technical documents
  • write reports in English with confidence
