LICENSING STEPS 
PHARMACIST

Pharmacists work in hospitals, community practice, pharmaceutical industries, government administration and wholesale trade. They monitor drug therapy, counsel patients on proper drug use, prepare and dispense drugs, provide information on drugs, conduct drug reviews and do research and marketing.

Licensing process in Manitoba

The pharmacy profession is regulated in Manitoba by the Manitoba Pharmaceutical Association.

The Manitoba Pharmaceutical Association conducts the licensing process in English only. Thus, all documents must be translated into English.

To practise pharmacy in Manitoba you must:

  • have a pharmacy degree from a university approved by the Manitoba Pharmaceutical Association OR your degrees must be evaluated by the Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada
  • successfully complete the qualifying examination of the Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada
  • complete a 360-hour internship
  • meet the other licensing requirements of the Manitoba Pharmaceutical Association

You must complete the following steps:

STEP 1: Contact the Manitoba Pharmaceutical Association and tell them you are an internationally educated pharmacist and would like information about how to become licensed to practise in Manitoba.

STEP 2: Contact the Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada.

STEP 3: Complete the the Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada application form to have your credentials assessed.

You must submit the following:

  • certified copies of immigration documents, birth certificate, marriage certificate or Canadian citizenship card *
  • original university degrees, certificates, transcripts and licensing statement *
  • two recent photographs
  • official transcript (a list of courses taken and grades obtained) *
  • letter stating your current licence to practise pharmacy is in good standing *
  • document evaluation fee ($515)

* If documents are not in English, notarized translations are required.

STEP 4: Complete the evaluating examination.

STEP 5: Complete both the oral and written parts of the qualifying examination.

STEP 6: Complete the Manitoba Pharmaceutical Association application form to obtain a practising licence.

You must submit the following:

  • letter stating your current licence to practise pharmacy is in good standing
  • certified record from the RCMP that you do not have a record of conviction
  • proof of language proficiency
  • one passport-size photograph
  • letter confirming appointment as a pharmacist
  • notarized copy of birth certificate
  • notarized copy of degree
  • registration fee ($492)

STEP 7: If required, complete an internship and subsequent jurisprudence examination.

STEP 8: When all requirements have been met and fees paid, you will be licensed to practise as a pharmacist in Manitoba.

Additional information

Annual licence fee is $715.

The evaluating examination fee is $500. It is offered summer and winter.

The qualifying examination written exam is $390. The qualifying examination oral exam is $1,475. They are offered in the spring and fall.

You may write the jurisprudence examination after completing 120 hours of your internship. The fee is $165.

Language: As part of your work, you are required to have intermediate or advanced English language skills in the four basic language areas - listening, speaking and reading and writing comprehension. Therefore, you should be able to:

  • participate in discussions of a complex nature
  • share your thoughts clearly
  • understand technical documents
  • write reports in English with confidence

English language proficiency requirements are as follows:

  • TOEFL Score: 580
  • C-TOEFL Score: 237
  • CanTEST Score: 4.5
  • MELAB Score: 85
  • IELTS Score: 6 in this module, overall score of 7

Writing:

  • TWE Score: 5
  • ERS Score: 5
  • CanTEST Score: 4.5
  • MELAB Score: 85
  • IELTS Score: 6 in this module, overall score of 7

Listening:

  • TOEFL Score 580
  • C-TOEFL Score: 237
  • CanTEST Score: 4.5
  • MELAB Score: 85
  • IELTS Score: 6 in this module, overall score of 7

Speaking:

  • TSE Score: 50
  • TSE Score: 50
