LICENSING STEPS 
RESPIRATORY THERAPIST

Through the use a variety of diagnostics, therapeutics and education of disease-management prevention, respiratory therapists plan, administer and evaluate treatments for people with respiratory and cardiac problems.

They work in acute care hospitals, the community, rehabilitation hospitals, clinics, private industry and research.

Respiratory therapy is a regulated profession in Manitoba.

Licensing process in Manitoba

To practise respiratory therapy in Manitoba you must:

  • have successfully completed the registered respiratory therapy education program in Manitoba OR you must have succeeded in completing an accredited respiratory therapy education program recognized and approved by the Manitoba Association of Registered Respiratory Therapists OR you must complete a prior-learning assessment to determine further educational elements required
  • have 720 hours of practice as a respiratory therapist in the past four years OR you must complete the the association's competency challenge examination and refresher program
  • be registered with the association

You must complete the following steps:

Note: The Manitoba Association of Registered Respiratory Therapists conducts the licensing process in English only. Thus, all documents must be translated into English.

STEP 1: Contact the Manitoba Association of Registered Respiratory Therapists and tell them you are an internationally educated respiratory therapist and want information on how to become licensed to practise in Manitoba.

STEP 2: Complete the Manitoba Association of Registered Respiratory Therapists application form.

You must submit the following:

  • originals of notarized certificate(s), degree(s) and transcripts
  • proof of registration or eligibility to be registered as a respiratory therapist in your country of origin
  • proof of participation in continuing professional development
  • verification of work history indicating at least 720 hours in the past four years
  • application fee ($25)

STEP 3: Complete the PLA process, if required.

STEP 4: When all requirements have been met and fees paid, you will be licensed to practise as a respiratory therapist in Manitoba.

Additional information

Annual association registration fee is $155.

As part of your work, you are required to have intermediate or advanced English language skills in the four basic language areas - listening, speaking and reading and writing comprehension. Therefore, you should be able to:

  • participate in discussions of a complex nature
  • share your thoughts clearly
  • understand technical documents
  • write reports in English with confidence
