Social work is a regulated profession in Manitoba.

Licensing process in Manitoba

To work as a social worker in Manitoba you must have a registration certificate from the Manitoba College of Social Workers.

Under the Social Work Profession Act individuals who use the title "social worker" are required to meet certain qualifications set out by the act and regulations. The Manitoba College of Social Workers will administer the act.

The qualifications required to apply for registration with the college include:

  • a social work degree from an accredited post-secondary faculty or school, or
  • completion of another educational program of study approved by the college, or
  • combination of education or training, and work or volunteer experience considered to be substantially equivalent and approved by the college

Language
As part of your work, you are required to have intermediate or advanced English language skills in the four basic language areas - listening, speaking and reading and writing comprehension. Therefore, you should be able to:

  • participate in discussions of a complex nature
  • share your thoughts clearly
  • understand technical documents
  • write reports in English with confidence
