MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNOLOGIST

Medical laboratory technologists (MLT) perform laboratory procedures that help diagnose and treat disease. They work in hospitals, private laboratories, community health clinics, public health facilities, university research labs, biotechnology companies and specialty labs such as in-vitro fertilization.

Licensing process in Manitoba

This profession is regulated in Manitoba by the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Manitoba (CMLTM).

Note: The college conducts the licensing process in English only. Thus, all requested documents must be translated into English.

To practise medical laboratory technology (MLT) in Manitoba you must:

  • have graduated from a MLT program accredited by the Canadian Medical Association OR you must complete a prior learning assessment by the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS)
  • have passed the CSMLS MLT certification examination
  • be registered with the CMLTM

You must complete the following steps:

STEP 1: Contact the CMLTM and tell them you are an internationally educated medical laboratory technologist (IEMLT) and would like information on how to become licensed to practise in Manitoba.

STEP 2: Contact the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science and tell them you are an internationally educated medical laboratory technologist (IEMLT) and would like a prior learning assessment so you can become licensed to work in Manitoba.

STEP 3: Complete the CSMLS application form to obtain a prior learning assessment (PLA).

You must submit the following:

(For details please read the PLA Information Handbook and Application)

  • notarized copy of resident status
  • notarized copy of professional certificate or license from the country in which you worked*
  • completed personal competency rating booklet
  • complete online self-assessment tool for IEMLTs
  • proof of language proficiency if your education was not in English or French
  • credential evaluation from an assessment service approved by the society official education transcripts*
  • syllabus of studies or outlines and descriptions of course content studied*
  • documentation of clinical education and apprenticeship training including official outline of scope and volume of testing performed*
  • official transcripts and course outline for other relevant education*
  • work experience letters from employers including detailed outline of responsibilities and tests performed*
  • documentation of continuing education and professional development*
  • application fee: C$800

* If documents are not in English, notarized translations are required.

STEP 4: Complete any additional course work required by your CSMLS PLA report.

STEP 5: Complete the Complete the CSMLS MLT certification examination.

STEP 6: Complete the CMLTM application form.

You must submit the following:

  • completed CMLTM application form
  • original copy of your CSMLS PLA report
  • letter of eligibility to write the CSMLS examination OR CSMLS examination results or certificate
  • copies of relevant degrees and certificates
  • copy of Canadian government issued photo identification
  • application fee: C$100
  • CMLTM annual registration fee: C$350

STEP 7: When all requirements have been met and fees paid the college will register you and issue you a licence to practise as a medical laboratory technologist in Manitoba.

Additional information

Professional liability insurance (coverage: $2 million) is required to practise as an MLT in Manitoba. Insurance policy is available with your CSMLS membership.

The CSMLS MLT certification examination is offered in June, October and February in Winnipeg (and other cities in Canada). The fee is C$499 to C$900.

If you have not written the examination yet you may be eligible for a conditional licence permitting you to work under direct on-site supervision of a registered MLT. You are expected to complete full registration within 14 months (three attempts at the CSMLS MLT certification examination).

Beginning in 2012 you will be required to meet professional development requirements and a work experience requirement of 1,200 hours in the past five years.

Language: As part of your work, you are required to have intermediate or advanced English language skills in the four basic language areas - listening, speaking and reading and writing comprehension. Therefore, you should be able to:

  • participate in discussions of a complex nature
  • share your thoughts clearly
  • understand technical documents
  • write reports in English with confidence
