PARAMEDIC

What paramedics do

Technicians, technician-paramedics and technicians-advanced provide pre-hospital emergency medical care to sick or injured people being transported to hospitals. Ambulance services employ them.

Paramedic is a regulated profession in Manitoba.


To work as a paramedic in Manitoba you must:

  • have completed an emergency medical responder, primary care paramedic or advanced care paramedic education program approved by Manitoba Health and Healthy Living, Emergency Medical Services Branch
  • have completed training within one year from the date of application OR provide proof of current practice
  • be licensed by Manitoba Health and Healthy Living, Emergency Medical Services Branch


You must complete the following steps:


STEP 1: Contact the Manitoba Health Emergency Services Branch and say that you are an internationally educated paramedic or emergency medical assistant and would like information about how to become licensed to work in Manitoba.

STEP 2: Submit a letter of request to the Manitoba Health Emergency Services Branch to have your education assessed.

You must submit the following:

  • identification of emergency medical services program completed
  • date completed
  • curriculum (learning objectives - didactic and practical, skill competencies, national occupational competency profiles comparison document, evaluation process and program hours)
  • practicum (areas attended, hours per area and competency requirements for each area)
  • previous emergency medical services experience (location, duration, copy of licence, contact information of licensing body)


STEP 3: Complete the Manitoba Health Emergency Services Branch application form to be licensed at the technician, technician-paramedic or technician-advanced level.

You must submit the following:

  • identification that includes date of birth
  • original and current criminal record check including a vulnerable sector screening
  • original and current child abuse registry check


STEP 4: Complete the technician, technician-paramedic or technician-advanced provincial licensing examination.


STEP 5: Upon successful completion of the licensing exam you will be issued a licence at the appropriate level. You are then eligible to work for a Manitoba-licensed emergency medical service.
