An agrologist gives professional advice about agriculture and bio-resources in Manitoba. Professional agrologists have formal training in natural sciences and economics. With the P.Ag (professional agrologist) designation, Agrologists are hired for their expertise in processing and marketing agricultural products, crops and livestock.

Agrology is a regulated profession in Manitoba. You must be approved to work as an agrologist by the Manitoba Institute of Agrologists.

To practise agrology in Manitoba and to get the P.Ag designation you must:

• have completed a four-year, university or college degree equivalent to a bachelor's degree in agriculture from the University of Manitoba (120 credits)
• complete the Agrologist in Training Program requirements
• be registered and accepted as a member of the Manitoba Institute of Agrologists

Licensing process in Manitoba

Note:

The institute conducts the licensing process in English only. Thus, all requested documents must be translated into English.

Applications are received on a continuous basis. However, the Admission and Registration Committee that reviews registration applications meets on a scheduled basis.

You must complete the following steps:

STEP 1: Contact the Manitoba Institute of Agrologists and tell them you are an internationally educated agrologist and want to receive information about how to become registered to work in Manitoba.

STEP 2: Complete the Manitoba Institute of Agrologists application for registration.

You must submit the following items:

• Declaration of Employment Sector and Scope of Practice form
• Professional Profile
• one character reference, preferably from someone in Canada;
• the application form and registration fee
• an educational assessment by World Education Services

STEP 3: Complete further training and get work experience if necessary.

If your education is assessed as equivalent to a bachelor's degree in agriculture from the University of Manitoba but you do not have Canadian work experience, you must enter the Agrologist in Training Program. Contact the Manitoba Institute of Agrologists for more information.

STEP 4: When you have met all of the requirements and have paid all of the fees, you will be allowed to practise as a P.Ag in Manitoba.

You must pay a registration fee every year.

Consult the Manitoba Institute of Agrologists regarding the costs of applicable fees.

Continuing professional development is required. You will be expected to take courses to improve your skills and knowledge as an agrologist throughout your career.

Language: As part of your work, you are required to have intermediate or advanced English language skills in the four basic language areas - listening, speaking and reading and writing comprehension. Therefore, you should be able to:

• participate in discussions of a complex nature
• share your thoughts clearly
• understand technical documents
• write reports in English with confidence
