Work in your profession: Dental hygienist

Dental hygienists provide preventive, educational and therapeutic services to individuals and the community. Dental hygienists play an important role in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of periodontal diseases. They are employed in dental offices, hospital dental clinics, educational institutions, government agencies and private industry.

The following individuals are considered to be engaged in the practice of dental hygiene - a dental hygiene clinician, educator, administrator, manager, health promoter, consultant, researcher or sales representative who represents that he or she is a dental hygienist and engages in the activities that involve the knowledge and/or practice of dental hygiene.

Licensing process in Manitoba

This profession is regulated in Manitoba by the College of Dental Hygienists of Manitoba.

Note: The college conducts the licensing process in English only. Thus, all requested documents must be translated into English.

To practise dental hygiene in Manitoba you must:

  • complete the National Dental Hygiene Certification Examination
  • have completed a dental hygiene program that is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada or the American Dental Association OR you must have completed non-accredited dental hygiene program along with a competency assessment
  • be registered with the College of Dental Hygienists of Manitoba

You must complete the following steps:

STEP 1: Contact the College of Dental Hygienists of Manitoba and tell them you are an internationally educated dental hygienist and want to get information on how to become licensed to practise in Manitoba.

STEP 2: Complete the College of Dental Hygienists of Manitoba application form.

You must submit the following:

  • proof of identification
  • evidence of dental hygiene education*
  • evidence of additional dental hygiene practice modules, if applicable*
  • evidence of completion of a CPR Level C course in the last 12 months
  • evidence of successful completion of the National Dental Hygiene Certification Examination
  • evidence of possession of a minimum C$3 million liability insurance coverage
  • evidence of good standing in other jurisdictions in which you have been registered or licensed to practise dental hygiene*
  • application fee: C$75)
  • annual registration fee: C$350 or pro-rated fee for new graduates: C$175

* If documents are not in English, notarized translations are required.

STEP 3: When all requirements have been met and fees paid you will be licensed by the college to practise as a dental hygienist in Manitoba.

Additional information

The fee for the certification examination is C$525 plus applicable tax.

The competency assessment may be completed after you have written the certification examination.

If required, you can apply to the school of dental hygiene at the University of Manitoba to complete the two-year accredited program.

Language: As part of your work, you are required to have intermediate or advanced English language skills in the four basic language areas - listening, speaking and reading and writing comprehension. Therefore, you should be able to:

  • participate in discussions of a complex nature
  • share your thoughts clearly
  • understand technical documents
  • write reports in English with confidence
