Work in your profession: Physiotherapist

Physiotherapists plan, administer and evaluate treatment programs and provide maintenance and preventive health-care programs. They may also consult, educate, advise and participate in research. They are employed in hospitals, clinics, schools, rehabilitation centres and extended care facilities. Many physiotherapists work in private practice.

Physiotherapy is a regulated profession in Manitoba.

Licensing process in Manitoba

To practise physiotherapy in Manitoba you must:

  • have a degree in physiotherapy or the equivalent
  • have completed at least 1,200 hours of professional work in the last five years
  • be registered with the College of Physiotherapists of Manitoba

You must complete the following steps:

Note: The College of Physiotherapists of Manitoba conducts the licensing process in English only. Thus, all documents must be translated into English.

STEP 1: Contact the College of Physiotherapists of Manitoba and tell them you are an internationally educated physiotherapist and want to receive information on how to become licensed to practise in Manitoba.

STEP 2: Contact the Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy Regulators and tell them you are an internationally educated physiotherapist in the process of becoming licensed in Manitoba.

STEP 3: Complete the Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy Regulators application form and checklist to register for the physiotherapy competency examination.

You must submit the following:

  • all original or notarized certificate(s), degree(s) *
  • official transcripts*
  • course syllabi (i.e., detailed description of courses studied) *
  • document request form completed by your educational institution
  • current resumé, if available
  • notarized copy of thesis information, if completed *
  • proof of registration or eligibility to work as a physiotherapist in the country where you were educated *
  • two copies of a recent passport photograph (taken within the last six months)
  • notarized birth certificate *
  • notarized marriage certificate (if applicable and only if your name is different in the documents submitted)*
  • copy of your passport information sheet and picture
  • copy of permanent resident card or record of landing certificate (only if you have not submitted a copy of your passport information sheet and picture)
  • evidence of language proficiency in English or French
  • credentials assessment fee: C$780

* If documents are not in English, notarized translations are required.

STEP 4: Complete the physiotherapy competency examination.

STEP 5: Complete part 1: qualifying examination.

STEP 6: Complete the College of Physiotherapists of Manitoba application for registration.

STEP 7: Complete part 2: physiotherapy national examination.

STEP 8: Apply for full licensure with the College of Physiotherapists of Manitoba.

STEP 9: When all requirements have been met and fees paid, you will be granted full licensure by the College of Physiotherapists of Manitoba.

Additional information

Annual College of Physiotherapists of Manitoba registration fee is C$425.

If your program of study is assessed as not equivalent to Manitoba standards, recognition for work experience or prior learning may be considered through a prior-learning assessment process and you may be asked to complete additional requirements.

The physiotherapy competency examination fees are:

  • Prior-learning: C$425
  • Preliminary assessment: C$300
  • Written component: C$775
  • Clinical component: C$1,200

The qualifying examination is offered in January, March, May, July, September and November. Registration fee is C$200. Examination fee is C$575.

The physiotherapy national examination is offered in June and November in Winnipeg if there is enough demand. Registration fee is C$200. Examination fee is C$1,000.

As part of your work, you are required to have intermediate or advanced English language skills in the four basic language areas - listening, speaking and reading and writing comprehension. Therefore, you should be able to:

  • participate in discussions of a complex nature
  • share your thoughts clearly
  • understand technical documents
  • write reports in English with confidence
