Pursuing post-secondary education

Post-secondary studies

In today's world of changing technology education is crucial for the advancement of yourself, your family and your new country.

After graduating from high school many adults continue their studies. Post-secondary institutions in Manitoba charge tuition fees. But you may be eligible to apply for loans, grants or bursaries from the government or to compete for scholarships. Visit Manitoba Student Aid.

Your options for post-secondary education

  • skills training to prepare for a trade, such as a hairstyling school or a community college electrician program
  • technical or academic "applied learning" programs at community college, with options that range from early childhood education to aviation management
  • private vocational schools that offer shorter, job-focused training such as legal assistant or computer-industry certification
  • university, which offers multi-year degree programs in arts, sciences, business and other academic and professional fields
  • For adults who want academic upgrading, such as taking some high school credit courses, Manitoba has Adult Learning Centres.
  • Once in the workforce some people enrol from time to time in part-time studies to ensure their knowledge and skills are current. This is known as "life-long learning" or "continuing education."

Requirements to enrol in university and college

You should contact the institution to find out what you must have to be accepted in a post-secondary program of study. The institution will tell you specific admissions requirements.

Mature Students

People 19 and older who have not fulfilled the Manitoba high school graduation requirements (or equivalent) can earn a Mature Student High School Diploma.

Community colleges may have a waiting list of a few years for some vocational training programs. However, graduates have a better chance of being accepted by a journeyman to apprentice in their chosen trade. For example, Assiniboine Community College offers a one-year construction electrician certificate program. Graduates may obtain journeyman status by subsequently completing an apprenticeship program.

International Students

The strong reputation of Manitoba schools and universities attracts many students from other countries. We welcome and appreciate the diverse perspectives they bring to our classrooms and communities. Manitobans, in turn, are encouraged to pursue international knowledge and intercultural understanding.
